[edit] Gopher football pages

Hi - I've been working on Gopher football pages when I have time for the last few months, and I recently went through and converted the tables on the "Minnesota Golden Gophers football under XXX XXXXX" pages to use the CFB Schedule templates. I did this after discussing it with some members of the College Football project, but it somehow didn't occur to me to discuss it with you before doing it since you're the one who put them up in the first place. The change is part of a drive to keep a uniform look to these pages between college football programs. I hope you agree with the changes.

Are you going to keep creating more of these pages? I noticed that you just added the Lou Holtz one a few weeks ago. I'm starting work on a "Birth of Minnesota Golden Gopher football" page which will have quick season rundowns of 1882 through 1899 along with a quick blurb on each coach from that era. Since Henry Williams took over in 1900 and coached for 22 years, 1899 is the logical point at which to end that article. We went through so many coaches then that it seems like the best way to represent them is to put them together like this and then redirect links into this page instead of having 14 or 15 separate "under coach" pages. Gopherguy 16:02, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on the pages - I'll keep going as I have time (I don't have tons of time available right now, so it will be a bit slow). Could you take a look at how I'm formating the page so far? The preliminary page is at User:Gopherguy/Sandbox - there is very little on it right now other than the season schedules, but you can see about how it will look. The idea is that it will compactly tell the history of the start of the Gopher football program. I'll use redirects to each of the coaches so their little blurb on the page will act as their Wikipedia page (except for William Heffelfinger who already has his own page). If anyone thinks that any of those early coaches should have a page of their own, they can always create one and we can direct to that page instead of to the section on this page. I like the idea of collecting these on one page because there were so many coaches back then and we have little information about any of them, so it seems like it would be a bit of a mess to have separate pages for everyone. Gopherguy 19:54, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Hi again - I have the page up now, it's called Birth of Minnesota Golden Gophers football. Take a look at it when you get a chance. I still have a number of things I want to add/change on the page, but it got solid enough that I decided I'd create its page and let the process of improving the article open up. Gopherguy | Talk 19:41, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments about the new page! There will still be changes to it, but it's in pretty good shape right now. I'm hoping it will get picked for the "Did You Know" section of the main page, but we'll see - today is the day it would get picked if the decision makers deem it worthy.
Regarding your question about combining the Glen Mason seasons onto one page, I don't think that is necessarily a good idea. The general consensus that I've seen discussed on formatting pages goes along with how you handled the "Minnesota Golden Gophers football under XXXX XXXXXXX" - combining multiple seasons onto one page if there isn't enough information about the individual seasons to justify their own pages. However, I think most of Mason's seasons have enough information available that we should probably keep them as separate pages and let them grow instead of making an "under Glen Mason" page.
It's also possible that over time, other seasons currently listed on combined pages like that might grow and justify getting their own page - for example, a big Lou Holtz fan might greatly expand the information on the 1984 and 1985 seasons to the point where they should get their own page. If that happens, I think we should let it happen and eventually remove the "under Lou Holtz" page. Gopherguy | Talk 15:34, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

I got your message about the new "under Glen Mason" page you created. I'll try to help out making the transition. I haven't done a lot of editing lately, but I should have some more time soon. I've been debating whether I should dive in and make pages for the national championship seasons or if I should start with an "under Henry L. Williams" page (which will probably have to be broken up into a couple of pages since he coached for 22 years) and work my way towards modern times from the beginning. Gopherguy | Talk 14:21, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi - I did finally get the "under Williams" page together and listed, and I see that you've added an "under Wes Fesler" page too. Since we're getting close to converging, I'd like to recommend that if you start working on another "under" page that you leave me a message so that I'm not duplicating your effort. I'll do the same for you if I start one. I was working on the "under Williams" page for quite a while, so it would have been bad if you had also spent a lot of work doing basically the same thing. Thanks! Gopherguy | Talk 19:56, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
I thought you might be working on the Warmath page which is why I wanted to ask about it. My plan of action right now is to keep plowing through and making these "under" pages until we have sections for every season of Gopher football. Once I've done that, I'm going to spend time going back and adding more information to each individual season so that there's more than a "the Gophers finished 4th in the Big Ten" statement for each year. I'll also go to each coach's main page (not the "under" page) and fill in more information about them as individuals. Thanks for the work you're doing - by the time we're done, the Gopher presence here should be pretty impressive! Gopherguy | Talk 21:15, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

With your addition of the Warmath page, we're getting closer to getting every season some basic representation here. I haven't added a page in a while, but I'll be back working on it soon. Bierman is the only one left with a big page - everyone else only had 3 or 4 seasons. I'm looking forward to having all of them done so we can start to improve them... some are pretty bare for information. I see that you've begun doing that on the later 20th century pages already. Gopherguy | Talk 18:56, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

You've been doing great work on these articles - I'm sorry that I haven't been doing my part lately. I hope to have some time over the holiday break to do some work, so let me know if you're working on the "under Bernie Bierman" page - if you are, I'll let you get it up and I'll work on fleshing out more information on the pages we already have up. If you haven't started it, I'll work on getting it together. Let me know - thanks! Gopherguy | Talk 19:27, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Overreacting?

Hi - am I overreacting with the minor edit war that is going on with me and the user Baseball Bugs? If you look at the Minnesota Golden Gophers football page's history, he changed the phrasing of the opening paragraph from "they compete in the Big Ten" to "they play in the Big Ten". His edit comment said "let's not overstate the situation" which, in my mind, says that he made the change as a joke about the Gophers bad season. So it was changed back to the way it was. He changed it again, saying "The do play in the Big 10. Saying they 'compete' is POV-pushing, especially for a team that finished 1-11" again showing that his motivation is to take a shot and not to improve the article. So we've been changing it back and forth and have been exchanging testy messages on each other's user talk pages. So, my question for you is whether I'm overreacting to the situation. I simply think that not only is there nothing wrong with "compete", but that it is more accurate than saying that they "play". Let me know what you think - thanks!
