[edit] History
Chestermere's history begins with the construction of the headworks of an irrigation water supply which formed Chestermere Lake. Eventually, residents were attracted to the area for its recreation opportunities and close proximity to Calgary. The Summer Village of Chestermere Lake was incorporated on April 1, 1977.
On March 1, 1993, Chestermere was incorporated as a town although its present population actually renders it larger than some Albertan cities.
[edit] Demographics
In 2006, according to Statistics Canada census data, Chestermere had a population of 9,564 living in 3,165 dwellings, a 148.0% increase from 2001. The town has a land area of 8.91 km² (3.4 sq mi) and a population density of 1,073.4/km² (2,780.1/sq mi).[3] The Town of Chestermere conducted a local census in June 2007 which showed the town population to have increased to 11,262[2], a 17% increase in population over the previous year's Statistics Canada census.
[edit] Community profile
Chestermere is located 18 kilometers (11 mi) east of the City of Calgary's downtown core via Highway 1A. Chestermere's primary attraction is the 2.65 square kilometers (1 sq mi) lake and an 18 hole golf course[4].
Chestermere Lake offers all residents and visitors summer and winter activity. It provides day use parks for launching boats, and family areas for the enjoyment of the outdoors.[5]
- Biking - Chestermere is connected to the Calgary bike pathway system at the south end of West Chestermere Drive (by the canal).
- Boat Launch - The Town of Chestermere provides a boat launch facility available to the general public for the launching of power craft at John Peake Memorial Park.
[edit] Education
The public schools in the town are Chestermere High School,[6] Chestermere Lake Middle School, and Prairie Waters Elementary School. Public schools in the town are run by the Rocky View School Division, which includes several other communities surrounding Calgary.
For publicly funded Catholic education, the town falls within the jurisdiction of the Calgary Catholic School District, which runs the St. Gabriel The Archangel school for grades K-12.
Most educational needs beyond this (e.g. post-secondary education) are met within Calgary.
[edit] Contemporary issues
Although Chestermere is considered a separate town in its own right, its proximity to Calgary has led to occasional questions regarding possible annexation as Calgary grows. In July 2007, the City of Calgary annexed an extensive tract of land from the Municipal District of Rocky View. This annexation places the current eastern city limits of Calgary about a mile from the western outskirts of Chestermere.[7]
