CablePulse 24 (commonly known as CP24) is a Canadian English language cable television specialty news channel owned and operated by CTV Limited, a division of CTVglobemedia. The channel was licensed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) as Pulse 24 in 1996 and was launched as CablePulse 24 (CP24) on March 30, 1998, under the ownership of CHUM Limited and minority partner Sun Media, owner of the Toronto Sun daily newspaper. Sun writers and commentators were featured regularly on the channel. On December 1, 2004 CHUM Limited acquired the remaining interest of CP24 (giving it 100% of its shares), when the Sun's owners sold their 29.9% share in CP24 after acquiring its independent broadcast station CKXT, the same day that CHUM Limited took control of Craig Media Inc. and its assets. On June 22, 2007, CTVglobemedia took control of CP24 as a result of a buyout of CHUM Limited.

[edit] Format

CP24 shares a newsroom with Citytv Toronto which is owned by Rogers Communications. News programming airing live on Citytv Toronto, such as CityNews (with the exception of "CityNews at Five"), Breakfast Television and special coverage, is always simulcast and/or rebroadcast on CP24. Despite having different owners since fall 2007, CP24 continues to air Citytv news programming.

The station also shares news resources with other CTVglobemedia properties such as entertainment news with Star!, and traffic coverage with the newsrooms of CTVglobemedia's radio stations (CHUM and CHUM-FM) in the city, while on the weekends and sometimes weeknights, traffic coverage is anchored by CP24's Pooja Handa in the assignment desk.

The channel's visual format is of a window using about two-thirds of the screen, where news and information programs are broadcast; the surrounding space contains weather and traffic information, along with scrolling news headlines and other details. This format has been described as more closely resembling a website than a conventional television channel. In overnight periods, the station broadcasts historical newscasts from the CityNews archive as Rewind, and news from international sources such as Deutsche Welle originated in English, or bearing English dubbing or subtitling, as Daily Planet.

[edit] Carriage

Most cable companies that carry the station air it on cable channel 24. The station does not air on any cable system outside of Central or Southern Ontario, but is available on direct broadcast satellite in some markets. The station is available across Canada on Bell ExpressVu, on which the station is part of the service's "News" package. It is also available in the "FYI" package provided to Star Choice customers. There have been at least tentative plans to launch localized versions of CP24 for other markets on the same channel, such as Vancouver, Ottawa and Barrie, and the other cities where the Citytv and the A-Channel stations exist.

[edit] Future

Since the acquisition of CHUM Limited by CTVglobemedia, CTV Newsnet and CP24 have been under the same ownership since June 2007. CTVglobemedia has announced that they plan to maintain all CHUM's specialty channels including CP24 and CTV Newsnet. Under an agreement with Rogers Communications, CP24 continues to air Citytv Toronto news programming.
