Shortland Street is mainly set in and around Shortland Street Hospital, a fictitious Auckland City public hospital (which had been a private clinic until 2001 when it was sold to the government by Dr Warner). The hospital gets its name from the fact it is located on Shortland Street in the fictitious suburb of Ferndale. The hospital also houses the Shortland Street Primary Care Clinic, and its own cafe.
There are several other locations, including The IV, a bar and restaurant, located opposite the hospital; Sugar, a cafe located somewhere in Ferndale; and Ferndale High School, the local state secondary school.
The exterior views of the houses featured on the programme are located around the North Shore, West Auckland and Auckland City - the interiors are filmed on sets in the studio. Camera angles suggest that Ferndale is somewhere on the North Shore looking towards the Sky Tower and port of Auckland. Other camera shots are views of Henderson and other parts of Auckland. [1] which constitutes about 17.5% of the domestic population.
In popular culture, Shortland Street is sometimes referred to as Shorty Street or Shorty. The show's famous name has been hinted at by TVNZ to be associated with the former Shortland Street television studios in the Auckland City CBD, a mainstay for TVNZ in Auckland until the end of the 1980s.

Shortland Street has had some exciting and scandalous storylines over the years to keep viewers tuning in. Storylines are planned five months before they are due to be screened. [2]
The significant storyline in 2007 was that of a serial killer who killed five women associated with Shortland Street Hospital and attempted to murder one other. Known as the Ferndale Strangler, his identify was revealed in the season finale as nurse Joey Henderson, who was about to strangle Tania Jeffries with a piece of IV tubing for going out with Kip Denton without telling Joey. Joey also tried to kill Shanti Kumari after finding out she was dating Scotty and was still engaged to Dinesh Jivani. Another controversial storyline involved 18 year-old student Hunter McKay's relationship with 34 year-old widowed mother-of-one Tess Adamson.
Shortland Street producer Jason Daniel revealed in an interview with the NZ Herald that 2008 will introduce new characters Dinesh Jivani (Shanti Kumari's betrothed) - a house surgeon, Morgan Braithwaite - a new theatre nurse, and Riley - a one-woman whirlwind seen as a blessing by some and a curse by others.
Usually, Shortland Street has a high-paced action storyline in the last week before it takes a break over Christmas and New Year to keep viewers in suspense. However, this did not occur in 2006, due to the explosive Anthony Richard's scandal and Huia's death storylines in October. In 2007, two end-of-year storylines one revealed Joey Henderson as the Ferndale Strangler, the other a car with Guy, Tuesday, Toni and Harry Warner being pursued by a police car failed to take a corner on a gravel road and rolled down a bank.
Shortland Street's 2008 season began on 14/1/08. It revealed that Tania wasn't strangled by Joey Henderson due to various incidents and left for a holiday with her family. The aftermath of the car accident Tuesday escaped with cuts and bruises, Harry escaped with a broken arm, the serious injuried were Toni, who lost a kidney, and Guy who was placed in an induced-coma. The dramatic end of the Ferndale strangler's reign happened on March 5, 2008 when an injured Joey Henderson jumped from the roof to his death after fleeing the police. Martha Riley - a one-woman whirlwind arrrive set to ruffle staff. Maia Jeffries and Morgan Braithwate returned in May.
