Shanti Kumari is a fictional character on the soap opera Shortland Street, and is played by Nisha Madhan.
Shanti works as the Charge Nurse (while Maia Jeffries takes maternity leave) at Shortland Street Hospital.
She is betrothed to Dinesh Jivani, however she is in love with James Scott.
She unknowingly Escaped two attacks from Joey Henderson
On Friday 8th of March, Dinesh and Shanti went to the temple together to pray for Joey(killed himself - The Ferndale Strangler), and when they return Dinesh informs Scotty that they went to the temple together and Scotty becomes a little frustrated because she had gone with him and actually prayed for the man that was responsible for the killing of five women. Dinesh tells him that he needed to be understanding and compassionate toward Shanti, if he wanted to keep the relationship stronger. Just at the end of the show, Scotty presents a bouquet of flowers and a ring to Shanti, from there he asks her to marry him. Shanti replied with "Yes"
Unfortunately the secret wedding didn't go as planned as Sunil, Shanti's brother, discovered that Shanti was getting married to Scotty, as he saw her sari, when he went to see Libby. He arrives at the hospital to tell Dinesh of the their wedding. Shanti's family and Dinesh arrive at their wedding causing more chaos to their realtionship.
Shanti knew little of Scotty's family and became suspicious of phone from a woman ringing about a problem at a rental property. A suspicious Shanti found photo of Scotty with a woman and two children. One day Shanti went to an address and knocked on the door which was opened by Scotty holding a baby. Scotty then explained that it was sister's and her children's place. Shanti met Jimmy, Scotty's father, who charmed her with stories about Scotty who later warned her not to get involved. Advice she ignored which lead to her and Scotty breaking up when she told him she had lent his father money and signed as guarantor for a loan she believed had been turned down. Shanti return a ring and chain to Scotty who broke down in tears. In the past days Scotty is refusing to talk to Shanti and Dinesh her spurned fiance is trying to woo her back. Scotty meet with Shanti at the IV to talk, while he was getting drinks Dinesh arrived and mentioned that the two had kissed. Scotty's anger boiled over and he left the IV and Shanti bursted into tears.
