[edit] SANS Conferences
When originally organized, SANS Conferences were like most traditional technical conferences, being a forum for technical presentations. By the mid-1990s, SANS evolved into a more commercial format offering events that combined training with tradeshows and vendor oriented marketing. Recently SANS has offered webcasts and email newsletters developed in conjunction with security vendors. The actual content behind SANS training courses and training events are still "vendor agnostic." Vendors can not pay to offer their own official SANS course, although they can teach a SANS "hosted" event via sponsorship.
Most of the training SANS provides is tied to the SANS operated GIAC Security Certifications.
[edit] SANS Technology Institute
SANS has recently branched out into the SANS Technology Institute, which is a degree-granted educational organization, based on SANS training. SANS continues to offer a great deal of free security content via the SANS Technology Institute Leadership Lab at http://www.sans.edu/resources/securitylab and IT/Security related leadership information at http://www.sans.edu/resources/leadershiplab
