Antonietta Stella

Maria Antonietta Stella, born on March 15, 1929 in Perugia, Italy, is an Italian spinto soprano.
Antonietta Stella was a notable Italian soprano of the 1950s and 1960s. She had great success early in life. Some roles she was noted for were Leonora in Verdi's La Forza del Destino of which there is at least one notable recording ( a live performance with Giuseppe di Stefano in Vienna in 1960 conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos), Elisabeth of Valois in Verdi's Don Carlo (a studio recording on Regis Records conducted by Gabriele Santini alongside notable baritone Tito Gobbi and bass Boris Christoff from 1954) and Maddalena in Andrea Chenier (recorded alongside Franco Corelli in a 1960s studio recording on EMI). Stella, like so many notable artists of the 1950s and 60s, was eclipsed somewhat by the competition between Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi, but she did have a notable career and left several very worthwhile recordings which is more than can be said for some other singers of the time.
