Quarterbridge Crossing was the first major crossing point of the Isle of Man Railway's first line to Peel and was opened in 1873, closing in 1968 with the rest of the line. Since then, the crossing keepers' lodge has become a private dwelling, and the track bed now forms an access road for motorists when the parallel road is closed for the famous TT races in June of each year. There also remains in existence the small lodge on the other side of the road which is similar in style to those also found at Crosby and Ballacraine further along the line, although this is now very overgrown and roofless. The railway at this point created a bottleneck in the road (one of the busiest on the island being the main artery from the south to the capital of Douglas) and once the railway was closed the road was significantly widened to ease congestion. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine a train crossing this portion of road today.
