[edit] Awards and recognition

During the 1994-95 school year, Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest was awarded the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education[2], the highest award an American school can receive.[3][4]

Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest was the 16th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2006 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools.[5] In Newsweek's May 22, 2007 issue, ranking the country's top high schools, Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest was listed in 1045th place, the 32nd-highest ranked school in New Jersey.[6] Northern Valley is known for implementing a new AP policy in which taking the AP exam is mandatory for anyone enrolled in an AP course. If the student does not take the exam, the student will receive an F for the course.[7] The BOE requires that the students pay the $84/exam, sometimes adding up to $504 when taking six AP exams. The school does not have "honors" equivalent courses in place of these AP courses and students who have consistently taken honors courses are forced into AP courses to keep up their GPA. Furthermore, when taking numerous AP exams, students are not able to focus on two or three and get a 5 on each, but instead must study for six four-hour exams that may cause a lot of stress and a score of a 2 or 3. Ironically, College Board denounces this policy. The controversy has sparked numerous articles and editorials in "The New York Times" and "The Bergen Record".[8]

[edit] Athletics

The Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest Norsemen compete in the North Bergen Interscholastic Athletic League, an athletic conference of high schools located in the northern part of Bergen County.

The school offers over 23 sports, which include participation at the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity level (46 teams) in the North Bergen Interscholastic Athletic League, as well as 60 co-curricular activities.

The 2000 girls volleyball won the state Group III championship, topping Paramus Catholic High School, 15-8 and 15-7.[9] The 2001 team repeated, defeating Ramapo High School in the finals.[10] The girls took the title again in 2003, over cross-district rival Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan.[11] The team took the 2006 Group II title over Chatham High School (25-17, 25-15).[12]

Both swim teams won their respective North I - B state titles, the girls defeating Kinnelon High School 103-67 in the finals and the boys topping Ramapo High School 104-66.[13][14]

The boys basketball team won the 2004 North I, Group III title, edging Teaneck High School, 53-50.[15]

In 2007, the field hockey team won the North I, Group III state sectional championship with a 1-0 win over West Morris Central High School in the tournament final.[16][17]
