Luis Gabelo Conejo

Luis Gabelo Conejo Jiménez (born 1 January 1960) is a former Costarican football goalkeeper. He played in his country during the 1980s with his hometown team San Ramón, CS Herediano and CS Cartaginés. He also played in Spain with Albacete Balompié, where he became an idol in the early 1990s.
He received international recognition during the 1990 World Cup. With heroic saves against Scotland, Brazil, and Sweden, he helped Costa Rica reach second round. He played 3 matches, conceding 2 goals. He did not appear in the round of 16 match against Czechoslovakia because an injury, in which his team was eliminated. France Football magazine named him the best goalkeeper of the tourmanent.
He currently works with the Costa Rica national football team, as the goalkeepers' coach. In his country, he is highly regarded by fans, even though he never played for any of the top clubs in the nation. Most of them consider him the best Costarican goalkeeper ever, and some the best overall footballers to come out of the country.
