The Long Island Ducks were a minor league hockey team, part of the Eastern Hockey League, that played its home games at the Long Island Arena (usually referred to as Commack Arena). This team was in existence from 1959 to 1973, when Long Island was awarded an NHL team, the New York Islanders.
The Ducks are most famously known for their former head coach, John Brophy. Brophy encouraged and epitomized old-time hockey, and brash physical play.
The Commack Arena was also made famous for its uncanny events that took place during the tenure of the Long Island Ducks. Because of the poorly-run heating inside the small arena, fans often attended games freezing. During one game, fans affected by the cold temperatures lit a bonfire in the arena, prompting the radio broadcaster to joke, "Tonight's game is brought to you by the Smithtown Fire Department".
Won the Eastern Hockey League North Division 1964-65 & 1965-66. Won the Eastern Hockey League championship in 1965.
