The Armenian Encyclopedia (AE) publishing house was initiated in 1967 as the as a department of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences under the presidency of Viktor Hambardzumyan (1908-1996), co-edited by Abel Simonyan (1922-1994) and Makich Arzumanyan (1919-1988). In 1988-1999 the editor-in-chief was K. Khudaverdyan (1929-1999) and since 1999 Hovhannes Aivazyan (born in 1947). It produced the Armenian Soviet Encyclopedia (ASE, Armenian: Haykakan Sovetakan Hanragitaran, Russian: Armyanskaya Sovetskaya Entsiklopediya АСЭ) in 1974-1986.

The AE publishing house also edited a children's encyclopedia in 4 volumes (1984-87), the Russian-Armenian Polytechnics Dictionary (1988) and a "Traveler's Encyclopedia" (1990). Since Armenian independence (1991) publications include titles on topics of Armenian irredentism such as the Karabakh War, the "Armenian Question" and the Armenian diaspora:

  • "Armenian Concise Encyclopedia" in four volumes (1990-2003).
  • a children's encyclopedia "Voskeporik" (Golden Belly) in three volumes (1993-1999)
  • "The Armenian Question" (1996)
  • "Armenian Diaspora Organisations" (2001)
  • "The Armenian Church. Hierarchical Sees and Dioceses" (2001)
  • "Christian Armenia Encyclopedia" (2002)
  • "The War of Karabagh. 1988-1994" (2004)
  • "Family Encyclopedia Series" in three volumes (1997-)

The first volume of the ASE appeared in 1974, and the first edition in 13 volumes was complete by 1987. The ASE includes 38,767 articles, 15,263 images and 858 maps. 100,000 copies have been printed.
